Veritas, Triton, and Callisto to use Network Passphrases

As Veritas, Triton, and Callisto are migrated to new Linux servers, you will need to use the network passphrase for the web or MySQL account when logging in. This passphrase may be different than the login password you currently use on these machines. While Champion accounts will also migrate to the new Linux servers, these accounts currently use network passphrases to authenticate which means Champion account owners should not experience any login changes unless a local password was previously set using the passwd command while logged into the account. In such situations, the passphrase may be different than the local password that is being used to authenticate in which case the information below would be applicable.

What is changing?

When you obtain an account on Veritas, Triton, or Callisto you receive a login password that is separate from the network passphrase. The login password that you currently use on Veritas, Triton and Callisto may be different than the one you will use after your account has been migrated to the new Linux servers.

Why is it changing?

By using network passphrases, security is enhanced, you will be able to use one passphrase to access all accounts in your group/departmental username, and you will be able to use Passphrase Maintenance to manage the passphrase for your account.

Who does this change impact?

This change will impact anyone who logs into an account on Veritas, Triton, Callisto, and in special cases, Champion (as noted above).

How will it impact me?

If you do not know the network passphrase for the web or MySQL account you will not be able to login to the account after it has been migrated to the new servers.

Will my account still migrate even if I don't know the passphrase?

Yes. The contents of your account will be moved, but you will not be able to update or modify files in your Veritas account on the new Linux servers without knowing the passphrase as you will not be able to login to the account. You will also not be able to login to Triton or Callisto after they have migrated to the new Linux servers without knowing the passphrase for the account, although applications in your web account will still be able to connect to your database account as normal.

I don't know the passphrase for my account. How can I get it reset?

The request must come from the owner of the account. Even though you may have been able to request password resets for Veritas in the past, this does not mean that you are authorized to make this request. This is because knowing the network passphrase provides the user with special privileges (such as creating additional accounts in that username) so passphrases can only be reset for the owner of the account. Since Veritas has been using local passwords that grant access only that machine, in the past owners have been permitted to authorize contact people and allow them the ability to request password resets for Veritas. This will no longer be the case on the new servers which means if the passphrase for a web account is forgotten, only the owner will be able to get it reset.
