Information You'll Need Before Applying for an Account on Webserve
This document describes the information you will need to have at hand when using the application form to request an account on Webserve. Most of the fields on the application form are required, so you'll need to have the information available before beginning the application form.
Description of account application fields
- Owner Information
- The Owner is the person responsible for all activities on the account and must be a fulltime Faculty or Staff member. Student groups who wish to use this server to publish university-related material may do so as long as the owner is a full time staff/faculty member who is ultimately responsible for the account and its use. All Owner information fields are required, and include:
- status (faculty or staff)
- name
- campus address
- IU campus
- campus phone
- email address
- Owner's personal IU Network ID
Note: the IU Network ID field must be the personal Network ID username of the Owner, not the Network ID password or an email address - just the username.

- Contact Information
- The Contact is the person who will be maintaining the Web site pages and may or may not be the same as the Owner. If more than one individual will be maintaining the site you can use the "Comments" section at the bottom of the form to provide information about additional contact people. The contact fields in the application form should contain information about the "primary" contact.

Information required for the primary Contact person includes:
- name
- campus address
- IU campus
- campus phone
- email address
- Contact's personal IU Network ID
Note: the IU Network ID field must be the personal Network ID username of the contact, not the Network ID password or an email an email address - just the username. - Please enter complete information when supplying Contact information, even if the Owner and Contact are the same person (i.e. do not enter "same" or "see above" in the application fields, otherwise your application may be delayed).

Additional Information section
- Suggested account name
- Enter a proposed name for the account.
Account names must be 3-8 characters in length, only lowercase, and may only
contain the characters a-z and 0-9. The first character cannot be a number.
The
account name should reflect the purpose of the account.
For security reasons, we cannot create web accounts on the central servers that are the same as your personal Network ID (or your first and/or last name), so please come up with a different suggestion for your web account name. We will check to see if your suggested account name is already in use, and if so will contact you about choosing another name.We have also found that in most cases that it is better not to create year-specific account names (i.e. fall2004) since you may wish to use the account in the future.
There is a $100 fee for web account renames. Please take special care in selecting an account name if you wish to avoid the cost associated with a rename.
- Service information

This field is not required and should typically be left empty.
Upon submission it will
automatically populate with the account name you have chosen. Account
related emails will be sent using the Sponsor and Contact email
information.
- Billing account number
- All non-general fund units or organizations with
External accounts
must pay a $250 annual fee for their account. A billing
account number is required if your IU Account number is on the
list below:
- 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 90-97, 00, 30, 32, 34
- Account numbers are identifiers for a pool of funds assigned to a specific university entity for a specific function. Account numbers are normally established by a department and must follow certain guidelines.

Academic departments, faculty, approved professional organizations, and
active student groups who are registered with the Student Activities
Office or the Student Life and Diversity Programs may
have accounts on Webserve with no charge for the first gigabyte (1
GB) of use. Additional 1 GB blocks are available
for $4.00 per year, per extra block.
Auxiliary Services are charged $250.00 for a 1 GB account each year. Additional 1 GB blocks are available at the $4.00 yearly rate.
Disk usage is based upon a rolling average. For more information, see:
- We will require an account number for disk usage billing. Charges may apply for premium services such as a virtual host address.
- General purpose of this account
- Please select the checkbox or checkboxes which describe the general purpose
of the account: Instruction, Research, Academic Dept/Group,
Administrative/Service Unit, Student Group, or Other.
- Description of the instituitional purpose
- Use the text box to describe in a few sentences the institutional purpose
of the account requested.
- Additional comments
- Use this text box to provide any additional information (e.g. additional
Contacts, special service needs, etc).
